Padma Shri recipient Punjabi poet Surjit Patar passed away on Saturday morning at his residence near the Barewal Colony here. He was 79. Patar’s family members stated that he passed away peacefully in his sleep. His demise has elicited sorrow from various political figures, including Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, who described it as a “significant loss for the Punjabi literary world”.
Dr Patar was born in Patar Kalan village of Jalandhar on January 14, 1945. He completed his master’s degree in Punjabi from Punjabi University, Patiala and PHD from Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar. He had joined the academic profession and retired as a professor from Punjab Agriculture University, Ludhiana.
