Chandigarh, 16 August (Harbans Singh)
The glow of patriotic fervour was visible on each face as Mehr Chand Mahajan DAV College for Women, Chandigarh, under the aegis of Department of Higher Education, Chandigarh Administration, celebrated the 78th Independence Day with great zeal. The day marked the culmination of Independence Week celebrations at the college wherein various thematic activities were organised to reinforce the spirit of patriotism. The Independence Day celebration began with hoisting of Tricolour in the campus by the Principal of the college Dr. Nisha Bhargava. The flag hoisting ceremony was followed by a cultural programme. The cultural programme included patriotic song renditions, dance performance and prize distribution ceremony wherein the winners of various competitions held during Indpenedence Week were felicitated. The Independence Week focused on paying homage to the motherland through events that included Tree Plantation under ‘Ek Ped Maa ke Naam’, Patriotic Books Exhibition, Tricolour Dress Competition, Patriotic Collage Making Competition, Traditional Recipes of India Competition, Millet based Food Competition, Patriotic Song Competition, Quiz on Indian Knowledge System, Hand painting Competition, and many more.
Talking about the glorious history of India, Dr. Nisha Bhargava aroused feelings of pride and patriotism as she shared the story of rebuilding of India brick by brick, mortar by mortar after a painful era of exploitation, followed by the pangs of partition. She also eulogised the role of women in India’s freedom struggle. Sharing India’s expectations from the youth and filling them with vitality, Dr. Bhargava quoted Swami Vivekanand to reiterate and help the youth realise that all the power lies within them. With the recitation of Rabindranath Tagore’s poem ‘Where the mind is without fear’, she impressed upon the fact that independence is not only about physical freedom but also about freedom from all sorts of fear and advised the students to practise yoga for achieving the state of fearlessness. She paid rich tributes to our freedom fighters through a heart-touching self-composed poem ‘Azaadi ka din’.
